Day 2
Eger and the Bull’s Blood of Eger
After breakfast, transfer to Eger: city tour of Eger, a Baroque town known for its red wines, a lively student center, a stronghold of Hungarian history, and a spa city — a charming small town for visitors. Guided tour of the old town including the castle, minaret, and cathedral.
In the afternoon, we take you to the “Valley of the Beautiful Women,” where you will enjoy a wine tasting of local wines. The Eger wine region lies between mountain ranges and produces excellent white and red wines. The legendary red wine Egri Bikavér (Bull’s Blood of Eger) and the white wine Egri Leányka (Maiden’s Grapes of Eger) are the most famous.
Return to Szilvásvárad. Dinner at the hotel.
Day 3
Tokaj
Trip to the Tokaj wine region (UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002). Tokaj is world-renowned thanks to its unique microclimate, volcanic and post-volcanic soil, favorable slopes, and the autumn mist caused by the Bodrog and Tisza rivers. The oak trees for the barrels also grow here. For a long time, Tokaj wine was considered medicinal; King Louis XIV of France called it “the King of Wines and the Wine of Kings.”
After a city tour of Tokaj, enjoy an interactive demonstration at a small cooperage where the fourth generation and his son make wine barrels from oak and brandy barrels from strawberry tree wood. This is followed by a wine tasting with snacks at a local winery, where popular grape varieties such as Furmint, Hárslevelű, Muskotály (Muscat), and Zéta are cultivated over several hectares.
Return to Szilvásvárad. Dinner at the hotel.
