Eger and Tokaj Wine tour

Wine has been produced in Hungary for a very long time: the Romans brought grapevines to the region more than 2,000 years ago. In the Middle Ages, Hungary became an important wine exporter. The sweet wines from Tokaj, in particular, became popular at royal courts across Europe. Tokaj was also the second wine region in the world—after Porto—to be classified by quality, in 1731. Winemakers in Tokaj often quote the French King Louis XIV, who referred to it as the “King of Wines, Wine of Kings.”

Since 1990, Hungarian wine production has once again developed a great variety and high quality. There are 22 recognized wine regions in Hungary, and today there are many private wineries of all types and sizes—many of them well known both nationally and internationally.
