In the Middle Ages, Hungary became an important wine exporter. The sweet wines from Tokaj, in particular, became popular at royal courts across Europe. Tokaj was also the second wine region in the world\u2014after Porto\u2014to be classified by quality, in 1731. Winemakers in Tokaj often quote the French King Louis XIV, who referred to it as the \u201cKing of Wines, Wine of Kings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since 1990, Hungarian wine production has once again developed a great variety and high quality.
